The Vikings were not just warriors known for their raids; their culture was heavily rooted in values such as honor, family, loyalty, agriculture and craftwork.
Here’s a quick history lesson.
Although they originated from Scandinavian countries, during the first half of the ninth century onwards, it is probable that most of those who partook in ‘Viking’ activity in the British Isles and Ireland were permanent residents of those islands.
Those who settled permanently in Ireland developed a distinct culture which is often referred to for convenience as Hiberno-Norse.
The Hiberno-Norse resided in trading towns and on farms scattered around the coasts of the Irish Sea, from coastal Ireland to the Western Isles and western coastline of Scotland.
Norse people considered courage without a doubt a necessity.
It was reinforced by sagas and poems that praised fearlessness and minimized cowardice. In a community that valued reputation and honor over anything else this demonstrated bravery and maybe lasting fame, which would live on forever.
The Viking subculture trusted highly in combat prowess and held and practiced the belief that even a `peasant' at the time could be rich or respected after a successful raid. They valued commitment and believed that an individual must earn respect and prove their worth in the clan/kingdom and reward them accordingly.
It is important to note that women were very respected in Norse culture and if they had the desire to fight in battle, they'd be encouraged to. There are many accounts of warrior women in the Viking sagas. They were female warriors known as; Shield-Maidens.
Archaeological evidence and DNA analysis hints that women did play a role in warfare, with some graves found to contain female remains alongside weapons however, most woman practiced Norse magic to aid their men to win in battle.
It is also known to be true; Vikings were always considered to be fearless, brave and strong. The Vikings culture and values coincide with those of TENUMBRA on the Cybersecurity battlefield.
